Minhwa, is a traditional art style from Korea which became popular in the 17th to the 19th centuries. There are many sub categories within Minhwa such as Chaekgori, Hojakdo and many more. Recently from my fascination with and inspiration of hanbok (Korea’s traditional clothing.) It had led me to discovering earlier depictions of hanbok through Minhwa, and so it sparked an idea in me to learn the techniques of Minhwa painting and bring it to the modern age with a modern twist.
Two paintings! Fortnum and Mason inspired by Minhwa. I think the items and displays at Fortnum & Mason are so beautiful and it’s always a joy to see something so aesthetically pleasing so I wanted to capture that in the style of Koreas folk painting Minhwa. I painted the things I like to do and in the Chaekgado painting, I painted the the products I enjoy from Fortnum and Masons. How gorgeous is their theme, I used traditional hanji and Korean paints.
I painted my favourite products like lemon curd, biscuits and their tea. I also enjoy their sweets and chocolates too. Fortnum and Mason is known for their teas so it makes sense to paint their afternoon tea items. Of course a Fortnum and Mason bag needs to be included.
One thing I enjoy is the interior of Fortnum and Mason, you can feel the age and the classic feel. I included the spreads shelf at the back which is my favourite part of the store. You can see the candy stands, iconic stairs and tea area. Though I focused on the inside, I painted the outside of the store.
